“Axolotl” explores emotional isolation, identity struggles, and the silent violence experienced by many young people growing up in contemporary Mexico. Through a deeply personal and symbolic story, the film reflects on themes such as alienation, emotional repression, masculinity, and the difficulty of human connection in an increasingly fragmented society.

The project also uses the axolotl as a social and political symbol. In recent years, the axolotl has become massively popularized in Mexican media, internet culture, merchandise, and even official national imagery. However, despite its growing visibility as a cultural icon, very little is being done to truly protect its natural ecosystem and survival. The species remains critically endangered, mainly due to environmental destruction and the neglect of the canals of Xochimilco, its last natural habitat.

In this sense, the film draws a parallel between the axolotl and an entire generation that feels admired symbolically but abandoned in reality. “Axolotl” seeks to raise awareness not only about environmental collapse, but also about emotional and social disconnection in modern Mexico. It reflects the contradiction of a society that celebrates symbols while simultaneously allowing the real living beings, ecosystems, and people behind them to disappear.

Rather than presenting social issues in a didactic way, the film approaches them through intimacy and emotional experience, inviting the audience to empathize, reflect, and question the fragile relationship between identity, memory, environment, and survival.
