The destruction foretold as Zaman Edan has finally descended upon the world. Truth no longer exists to be held onto. Social structures collapse, and humanity gradually regresses into its most primal instincts. A woman named Arundaya lives in enslavement, her entire existence controlled by Batara Kala, a wayang figure from Javanese mythology who manifests as a system of worldly decay, the ruler of time, and destruction itself.
Under Batara Kala’s dominion, humans lose their dignity and are driven by animalistic impulses. The world is no longer shaped by dialogue or understanding, but by endless screams. Batara Kala does not merely imprison Arundaya’s body, but also her soul. In this cruel and merciless world, Arundaya longs for freedom, so that she may remain a woman and a human being.
Statement
404 explores the continuing legacy of oppression, dehumanization, and power structures rooted in colonial history and still present in contemporary society. Inspired by Javanese philosophical ideas such as Jaman Edan and Jaman Wolak Walik by Ronggowarsito, the film reflects on a world where truth, empathy, and humanity gradually collapse under systems driven by greed and domination.
Through the confrontation between Arundaya, a female slave, and Batara Kala, a figure symbolizing destructive power, the film raises questions about inequality, exploitation, and the normalization of violence within social structures. By intentionally exposing the filmmaking process itself, including the studio setting and production apparatus, 404 also reflects on how systems of control can exist not only in history and society, but even within art and representation itself.
Rather than offering simple answers, the film aims to create a space for reflection and confrontation, encouraging audiences to reconsider the relationship between power, humanity, and the realities we continue to live with today.
